The Percussion Program at Savanna High School is undergoing some major renovations. We have altered our focus from winter Marching Percussion to allow students to explore more of the instruments in the percussion family as well as to allow them to truly develop as musicians.
Rather than spending 5 months working on learning and perfecting a 4-minute show, we will be teaching students how to play ALL of the instruments in the percussion family and allowing them them to explore many different types of percussion music through their performances in small and large percussion ensembles.
Students will learn and develop appropriate performance technique and reading skills on the following instruments: snare drum, bells, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, bass drum, suspended cymbal, timpani, crash cymbals, triangle, chimes, wood blocks, gong, claves, guiro, cabasa, congas, bongos, timbales, ratchet, sleigh bells, and anything else we may decide to learn how to hit.
Not only will the students learn how to play these instruments, they will also learn how the instruments are made and how to repair and tune them when it becomes necessary.
Enrollment in the winter percussion program is open to all Savanna High School students who are interested in drums and percussion. Students must purchase these required materials.
Instructors for the Winter and Spring of 2005 are Stuart Pompel, David Henkel, and Brian Belski.
